Tom Coughlin’s New Deal Now Official:  As expected, the Giants officially announced yesterday that Head Coach Tom Coughlin has a new 4-year contract with the Super Bowl Champions.  The deal is believed to be worth approximately $21 million.  The contract replaces his old deal and Coughlin is now under contract through the 2011 season.

“Tom Coughlin has done a great job for us and we think this contract recognizes his outstanding achievements here,” said Giants’ President and CEO John Mara.  “This is a message to him and to our fans that we want him to be our coach for many years to come.”

“For Tom Coughlin, ‘coach’ is not just a title, it’s a responsibility,” said Giants’ Chairman and Executive Vice President Steve Tisch.  “He took a group of football players and molded them into the best team in the world.  We are honored he will lead the New York Giants for many more years and know that the team and its fans are better for his amazing contributions.”

“I am looking forward to working with Tom for the next four years and beyond,” said General Manager Jerry Reese.  “Our players feed off his energy, and his dedication to winning is unprecedented.”

“I was thrilled to become the head coach of the New York Giants in 2004, after my interviews with John Mara, Ernie Accorsi and Mr. (Wellington) Mara and Mr. (Bob) Tisch,” said Coughlin said.  “It would be difficult for me to capture the emotions for the opportunity I was given back in 1988 to be an assistant coach with the Giants.  And then to have the opportunity to be the head coach was the fulfillment of a dream of a lifetime.  And now to be able to continue in that capacity – with this organization, with this leadership, with this football team and with my coaching staff in place – is something my family and I are extremely excited about.”

CB Brian Kelly and QB Trent Green Signing Elsewhere:  Unrestricted free agent CB Brian Kelly (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) has signed a 3-year contract with the Detroit Lions.  Kelly had visited the Giants last Thursday.

Unrestricted free agent QB Trent Green (Miami Dolphins) is expected to sign shortly with the St. Louis Rams.  Although Green had not visited the Giants, the team had expressed some interest in his services.
