New York Giants Trade for PK Lawrence Tynes; Release PK Marc Hickok: The Giants have officially announced that they have acquired PK Lawrence Tynes by trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for an conditional 2008 draft pick. A local report out of Kansas City says the conditional pick is a 7th rounder that might become a 6th rounder based on Tynes’ performance.

In three seasons with the Chiefs, Tynes was 68-of-87 (78.2 percent) on field goal attempts and 137-of-141 on extra point attempts. Tynes was also 6-of-11 on field goal attempts from 50 yards or more.

Tynes will compete with Josh Huston. Marc Hickok was released by the Giants yesterday.

“Tynes is a veteran kicker who has kicked in some big games,” said General Manager Jerry Reese. “He has made some long field goals.”

“We feel better about having a veteran kicker coming in and competing for the job,” Reese said. “We’re not bringing him in to give him the job. He has to earn it. We feel like we have a strong young guy (Huston) versus a veteran kicker (Tynes) and the best kicker is going to win the job.

“We wanted a guy to come in here and put pressure on (Huston), who we really like a lot. Huston has a really strong leg. But we feel better about having a guy that’s kicked in the league to come in and compete for the job, because we were basically handing it to (Huston) without a lot of competition. We want to put pressure on him to earn the job. And we want (Tynes) to earn the job as well. One of our goals is to have competition at every position.”
