Giants and Broncos Talking Trade Regarding LB Al Wilson: The NFL Network is reporting that the New York Giants are having “substantive and heated” talks with the Denver Broncos about a trade for 5-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker Al Wilson. Wilson, one of the emotional leaders of the Broncos, turns 30 in June. The NFL Network says a deal could be finalized as early as this weekend. While the Eagles and Lions are also interested, The NFL Network is suggesting that the Giants are the leading candidate for Wilson’s services.

However, Wilson’s agent is denying the report that any trade is imminent. “It’s a little premature,” said the agent. “There are a number of teams that are interested in Al – Al is a player who is definitely in high demand – but no decision has been made even whether Al will be traded. There’s a number of moving parts. We’re just going to take it one move at a time…The Giants have expressed interest. We’re exploring all options. We want to make a decision that’s best in Al’s short-term and long-term interests.”

The various NY/NJ newspapers are reporting that Giants’ team officials have confirmed that the team is indeed talking to the Broncos about Wilson. However, the team officials say that trade talks are in the initial stages. One source also told The Daily News that the Giants are not the clear-cut favorite to land Wilson. The Star-Ledger is reporting that The NFL Network‘s report of a deal almost being done has surprised other teams around the League and competition for Wilson may now increase for the Giants.

The Broncos have been trying to trade Wilson because Denver is tight against the salary cap and Wilson is scheduled to make $5.2 million in salary in 2007. He also could earn another $600,000 in workout bonuses. Wilson is currently under contract through the 2010 season. He is scheduled to make $3.65 million in 2008, $5.15 million 2009, and $6.8 million in 2010.

Wilson was voted to his fifth Pro Bowl appearance this past season, but missed the game due to offseason surgery to his thumb. He also was hampered by injuries to his neck and back.

If Wilson were traded to the Giants, The Star-Ledger reports that a source familiar with the Giants’ plans says that Wilson would be moved to weakside linebacker, while Antonio Pierce remains at his middle linebacker position.

Notes: QB Eli Manning proposed to his girlfriend on Tuesday. The two have been dating for the past five years. No wedding date has been set but it will occur after the 2007 season.
