New York Giants Must Cut Down Roster to 53 Today: All NFL teams must cut down their rosters to 53 players by 4:00PM today.

September 1, 2006 New York Giants Injury Update: LB LaVar Arrington (knee), LT Luke Petitgout (back), OC Shaun O’Hara (knee), and OG/OC Rich Seubert (toe) are all expected to practice next week.

WR Sinorice Moss (quad) says he will start practicing again next week too. “I’m definitely practicing Monday and they’re definitely thinking about using me in the game Sunday,” Moss said yesterday. “I’m feeling great.”

Notes and Quotes: The players are off until Monday, when they begin practicing for the regular-season opener against the Colts.

LB Antonio Pierce on the Giants’ linebacking corps: “If we’re healthy, we’re going to be a top-five defense because the linebackers on this team will make us be a top-five defense — nothing else. We can talk about the defensive line, we can talk about the secondary, but the way our defense is set up, it’s for our linebackers to make the plays and be the dominators. So as long as we’ve got the guys in there and we’re healthy, we’re going to be the dominators.”

Patriots’ Head Coach Bill Belichick’s post-game comments on the Giants: “That was a good football team we played out there tonight. The Giants won this division last year and I can see why. They’re big, they’re fast, they’re athletic, and they have a lot of good players. They played pretty well tonight. We got a look at a lot of guys and hopefully that will help us make some decisions in the next couple of days as we take care of our roster and move along toward Buffalo. (It is) another step in the whole process of getting ready for the regular season. There were some positive things out there tonight and some things that we need to work on. It was a good look at a good football team. The Giants, they do a lot of things well. They can run the ball, they’re tough, good on defense. They have some good schemes that are tough to get ready for. That’s where we are.”

DE Osi Umenyiora’s post-game comments on DE Mathias Kiwanuka: “He is very, very impressive. The guy is a force. He is a force to be reckoned with. If he continues to grow, he is going to be outstanding. We are loaded with depth at defensive end. Justin Tuck played real well and so did Adrian (Awasom) and Eric (Moore). You can’t ask for much more than that.”

LG David Diehl post-game comments on HB Brandon Jacobs: “It is awesome. He has definitely worked hard. He has made a lot of progress from last season to this season. He is playing with a lot of confidence; he is playing hard and running well. It is exciting for him to do that; it is probably very exciting for him. Anytime you have a workhorse like that, you want to feed him the ball. It is good thing to see when they are putting an extra guy in the box and he is still running them over. It is just great for our offense.”
